South Street Nursery celebrated its 80th birthday today (Wednesday 1 July).
To mark the occasion, Mayor of Rochdale, Surinder Biant planted a tree in the nursery garden and staff and students buried a time capsule, which they hope will be opened in years to come.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Biant said: “I am very pleased to have been invited to this special day celebrating this big birthday.”
The school decided to plant a tree so they have a constant reminder of the occasion.
It is hoped that in the future, the time capsule is found and opened to show people what things were like from this generation. The capsule includes toys, games and accessories.
Described as an “important part of the community”, the nursery often celebrates landmark anniversaries and has previously held events to celebrate their 50th, 60th, 70th and 75th birthday.
South Street is a pre-school nursery for children aged 3-4 years.
