Hundreds of people gathered in Heywood today (Saturday 20 June) and stepped back in time for the annual 1940s Day.

The event, which is in its seventh year, saw a variety of 1940s themed attractions spread across the town.

Many people dressed for the occasion in clothes and costumes from the 1940s or in armed forces uniforms from the period. Local shops also decorated their shop windows with 1940s items.

An armed forces parade made its way through the town, with the streets lined by people.

Melanie Caffrey, one of the organisers, said: “Despite the weather, it has gone really well and we are really happy with it.

“The people of Heywood have really turned out and showed their support, as well as people from far and wide. I have heard that there are people from St Helens, Wigan and Torquay here.”

Heywood 1940s Day held every year.

This year Armed Forces Day takes place on Saturday 27 June and celebrates the UK’s armed forces – past and present.

It is anticipated that the event will take place again next year.
