Rochdale Rotary Club give £6,500 to charity

Date published: 19 June 2015

At a presentation lunch at the Masonic buildings on 11 June in front of 40 Rochdale Rotary members and friends a total of £6,500 was handed over to NSPCC Schools Service, Mary’s Meals, Red-Aid and Roch Valley Hospital Radio.

Helen Matthews, NSPCC Area Co-Ordinator for Childline Schools Service, described the ways that money will be used to extend awareness of NSPCC’s support if children encounter abuse.

Deborah Sefton, NSPCC Community Fund-Raising Manager for Greater Manchester, also gave a broader view of NSPCC’s activities and how the helpline works.

David Murphy, Chairman of Roch Valley Radio, gave an update on how the hospital radio has gained more members recently and been able to transmit local news, football commentaries and other programmes to more and more NHS hospital patients. President Bob Chadwick has been closely involved with this charity and handed over the reins to David last year.

Trish Alessandra, representing Red-Aid, gave an overview of how Redwood School uses the charity money for the relief of children aged up to 19 who have a learning disability, including their families and carers in Rochdale and its surrounding areas, by providing assistance above and beyond that which is provided on the national curriculum.

Money was also sent to Mary’s Meals a charity providing regular meals in overseas countries so short of good food for their children.

Bob Chadwick said: “It’s been a very busy and enjoyable year in our club, we have all worked very hard together; Rochdale’s people have been very generous at our events, particularly at the Art Exhibition. Hearing the charity speakers today is the culmination of our efforts and it has been a wonderful experience.”
