Hamer Amateur Boxing £2,320 funding from RBH

Hamer Amateur Boxing Club and Community Fitness Centre has been awarded an 'Our Choice Grant' of £2,320 in funding from Rochdale Boroughwide Housing to help benefit RBH residents with a free fitness programme for youngsters and adults.

Hamer coach Steven Connellan said: "We aim to access people within the RBH community from the age of five and above and help provide a holistic approach to health and fitness whilst also promoting healthy eating and exercise.

"Given the financial constraints most people are feeling at the moment it is pleasing that RBH have awarded us this money so that we can give their tenants and residents the opportunity to come to our gym free of charge and learn new skills, exercise and socialise whilst geting tips on healthy eating.

"We hope the project will help boost any low confidence that people may have and we will also offer a structured environment whilst also combating social problems such as drugs, alcohol and anti social behaviour and help make a positive impact upon their personal and social lives."

A spokesman for RBH said: "The tenants and residents were given control of £47,000 to vote for their favourite project, which we hope will help shape their future lives, and Hamer Boxing Club and Community Fitness Centre received the top award from them.

"We know that Hamer Boxing Club has done some very good things within the community already and they have established good working partnerships with numerous organisations within Rochdale such as the NHS, Link4Life, Rochdale Youth Service and GM police, so we congratulate them and hope they can continue with their good work."

The free sessions begin on 6 June until 5 December every Saturday from 12 noon until 1.30pm. For more information ring Steven on Tel: 07719 883088 or go to the gym at Unit 4, Rugby Road, Rochdale OL12 OEP.
