Student artists impress with show

Date published: 18 June 2015

Hopwood Hall College opened its doors this week and invited the public in to view students work, as part of the College’s end of year show.

The show, which was held at the College’s Rochdale campus, was filled with work created by art, design and creative media students. Not only was this a chance for family, friends and inquisitive passers-by to view the results of all the students hard work over the year, it was also a chance for the local community to see just what talent there is at the College.

The exhibition was fun, colourful, lively and thought provoking – and there was certainly enough work on display for everyone to enjoy! Work included fashion design pieces, sculptures, ceramic work, print making, painting and large experiential installations.

One such body of work was created by Lois McGee, 18, from Rochdale. Having been approached by a local museum to produce pieces around the proposed exhibition ‘What lies behind the face,’ her series of portraits were painted to tell a story of each individuals life and featured both family members and strangers.

Fellow student Franchesca Kershaw, 19, also from Rochdale, based her work on a campaign on anti-stereotyping. She created a collection of paintings and prints which looked at how stereotyping can affect young people.

First year student, Lauren Shore, 17, from Littleborough created her work based on the theme of Rochdale Town Hall. First year students were all asked to use this as their theme and choose between the interior, exterior, the venue events or the architecture of the building to base their work around.

Preparation for the show had caused a real buzz with students, as work that had been toiled over for weeks and months was made ready to be revealed at the show.

Hopwood Hall College textile and fashion lecturer Annette Houghton commented: “The end of year show is a real chance for the students to showcase what they have been doing. It’s clear as you look around the show just what a talented bunch of students we have.

Everyone who has visited the show has commented on how great the work is. We’re all very proud of what the students have achieved.”
