Rochdale Town Hall hosts celebration to mark 800th year of the signing of the Magna Carta

Date published: 16 June 2015

Rochdale Town Hall played host to a special tea party on Sunday (14 June) to celebrate the 800th year of the signing of the Magna Carta.

Held in the Great Hall of the Town Hall, which features a large Magna Carta mural by artist Henry Holiday.

The event gave guests the opportunity to celebrate, debate and reflect on the freedoms and rights enshrined in the ancient document.

The afternoon’s event included a demonstration of clog dancing and pipe playing from Littleborough based group Oakenhoof Cloggers and the Black Nan band and a discussion took place in the council chamber, facilitated by members of Rochdale Youth Parliament.

Monday 15 June marked the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta, which was the document that laid the foundations for the rights and representation that we enjoy today. It outlined basic rights under the principle that nobody, including the King, was above the law.
