Stay healthy this Ramadan

Date published: 16 June 2015

Participating in Ramadan is a major occasion for Muslims. The holy month is an opportunity for those taking part to think about those less fortunate than themselves, practice self-sacrifice, purify the soul and focus their attention on God.

It is, however, vital to the health of everyone participating in Ramadan that all is done to fast as safely as possible and maintain good health during an important spiritual period.

Omar Lorgat, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for the North West Ambulance Service advises: “While undertaking fasts over a long period of time, especially in hot weather, the risk of dehydration is very common. It’s important to balance food and fluid intake between fasts and especially to drink enough water. If during this Ramadan period you start to feel unwell, disorientated or confused, our advice as supported by Islamic principles is to stop fasting and have a drink of water or other fluid.

“This is especially important for older adults, and for those that require controlled medical conditions such as low/ high blood pressure, diabetes and those who are receiving dialysis treatment. The Muslim Council of Britain has confirmed that breaking fast in such conditions is allowable under Islamic Law.

“Also make sure to check on others in the community who may be at greater risk and keep an eye on young children that are attending mosque prayers, in particular fairly late and early on in the day to ensure they are having a safe and healthy Ramadan.

“People with pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes are advised to seek medical advice before participating in the fast.”

If you do need help while fasting, it is important that you tell ambulance crews that you are doing so, allowing them to factor this into your care.
