Hundreds of people turned out to support Norden Carnival today (Saturday 13 June).

Local businesses, community groups and schools took part in the annual parade, which saw those involved dressed as their favourite film characters.

Rachel Blackburn, from the organising committee, said: “It has been brilliant. We have had the most floats we have ever had this year and everyone has put in so much effort. It has been fantastic.

“The weather really held out and I think that definitely helps. People have lined the streets and have been really supportive. It has been great.”

Prizes were awarded to:

  • Best Walking Group – Norden Community Primary School
  • Best Float – Friends of Norden Jubilee Park
  • Best Dressed Boy – James Connett
  • Best Dressed Girl – Lily Dale
  • Best Dressed Shop Window – New Mayfair Hair

The parade left Caldershaw Primary School on Edenfield Road at 1pm and went through the village before turning back and heading to Norden School.

Newcomers to the parade this year included the Norden WI, Norden Childminders and Total Smart Solutions.

Once at Norden School, fairground rides were on site as well as refreshments, games and entertainment.

The carnival raises funds for local charities and community groups. Those benefitting this year include Springhill Hospice, as well as all the schools and community groups/charities that took part in the procession.

“It’s a fantastic way for the community to get involved, have a great day and give something back to good causes,” added Rachel.

Suggestions for next year’s theme are now being taken. An online poll will be opened in September with voting closing early January.
