Rochdale to Blackpool charity walk to raise money for Children with Cancer UK and Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust

Date published: 12 June 2015

A group of 16 friends from Rochdale are set to put their walking boots on as they aim to walk from Rochdale Town Hall to Blackpool Tower, to raise money for Children with Cancer UK and the Addenbooke’s Charitable Trust.

The group decided on the fundraising walk after Lucas Devaney, a friend’s three-year-old son, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in March.

Lucas is currently receiving chemotherapy treatment as well as other injections that are needed to ensure he beats the disease. Once this stage of treatment is complete, Lucas will move into the maintenance phase, which will allow him to grow up normally and play with his friends or go to school, as he loves to do.

Kirsty Lang, one of the people taking part in the walk, said: “We want to try and do as much as we can really. None of us are what you would describe as fitness freaks, so we decided to do something where we could push ourselves.”

The group will be setting off from Rochdale Town Hall at midnight on Friday 19 June and aim to be in Blackpool “sometime on Saturday”.

“We think it will take about 16 hours altogether but we are not sure. We are just going to get there when we can", added Kirsty.

The group want to raise as much money as possible for the two charities, both of which have given help to Lucas since his diagnosis.

Children with Cancer UK, formerly known as Children with Leukaemia, is the leading national charity dedicated to the fight against childhood cancers.

The Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust is the only registered charity dedicated to supporting innovation in patient care across Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals.
