GMP recognise special contributions to policing

Date published: 05 June 2015

Greater Manchester Police is celebrating the work of its 693 special constables as part of National Specials Weekend (5-7 June).

The weekend showcases the work that the Special Constabulary do across the country and recognises the contribution that these individuals give to society.

The volunteers give up their own time to police the streets of Greater Manchester and play an integral role in keeping our communities safe.

Having the same policing powers as regular officers, specials create a very important link between the community and police.

Along with assisting regular officers, they also help to coordinate crime reduction initiatives and support community partnership projects.

GMP’s Special Constabulary Chief Officer Mike Walmsley said: “I am incredibly proud of all of the specials who give up their time to help support local policing.

“Our special constables gave over 216,000 hours of their own time last year, this dedication is amazing and their contribution to tackle crime is vital to keeping Greater Manchester safe.”
