Students battle it out at competition

Date published: 03 June 2015

Students from eight further education colleges from across the Greater Manchester area came together at Hopwood Hall College to see if they could succeed in a series of competitions.

The competitors, who were all uniformed public services students, took part in a number of competitions throughout the day. Hopwood Hall College’s 73 acre Middleton campus became the perfect venue for the event, which was part of the Greater Manchester Colleges Group (GMCG) annual Inter-College competition, one of the region’s largest skills competitions there is.

On the day the students took on a number of tailored activities and skills that the students will need when they join the services. It saw the competitors endure events such as cross fit sessions, military team and leadership activities.

After a tough day of competitions, the scores for each event were added up to reveal who had gained the title of winner of the GMCG Skills Competition for Public Services.

First prize was awarded to the Hopwood Hall College team, second prize was given to Salford City College and third place was presented to Trafford College.

Terry Morley, Hopwood Hall College’s Centre Director for Sport and Public Services said: “I was delighted for the Hopwood Hall College team. It gave the students a real sense of pride and they know what they have been learning at college will give them a great start in the services. The day was a real success for everyone involved.”

The event was sponsored by Sport4real and CrossfitOL1, who provided the trophies and prizes. The sponsors were delighted with the day commenting that the students were a real pleasure to work with and that all were keen to learn and participate.

Hopwood Hall College’s Becki Lee, who helped host the event, added: “The day was a huge success, the students got so much out of it.

"Competing in events like this offers a great training ground for them to hone their skills and meet other like-minded students. It’s also a way to help prepare them for national competitions, so this will be an important fixture in the Hopwood Hall College calendar going forward.”
