Residents are being urged to be on their guard against bogus callers claiming to be builders and roofers.
People who say they are builders or roofers have been reported cold-calling at homes using high-pressure sales techniques to get money for work that is not needed. They have also been reported claiming to be council or trading standards officers.
At one property in Rochdale a roof that was supposed to have been replaced was only repainted to make the existing tiles looked like they were new.
Councillor Janet Emsley, Rochdale Borough Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Health and Wellbeing, said: “Residents can take simple actions to protect themselves. Avoid accepting work form cold callers, only use bona fide companies that have been recommended by a friend, neighbour or people that you know.
"If you do accept services, make sure you get a written notice of right to cancel and always try to get quotes from other reputable traders, rather than making an impulse decision to accept work.”
Residents can report any concerns to the Consumer Advice Service on 03454 040506.
