Hundreds take part in Dragon Boat Race
Date published: 30 May 2015
Hundreds of people took part in the Dragon Boat Race held today (Saturday 30 May) at Hollingworth Lake.
The event, run by Rochdale Round Table in aid of Springhill Hospice, saw teams compete in races on the lake.
Lillie Winterbottom, Community Fundraiser for Springhill Hospice said: "Another fantastic event from Rochdale Round Table. The Dragon Boat Race was an amazing experience, one which we'd recommend.
“Springhill had their own team - Springy's Mean Green Dragon Boat Team. We won two races and lost one.
“Springy's gang, captained by Director of Corporate Services, Paul Byrne, didn't make it into the final but all the teams were winners for having taken part.
“A great day with an important outcome, that of the money raised for the Hospice by Rochdale Round Table, the teams taking part and their sponsors.
"A huge thanks to everyone at the Rochdale's Round Table and everyone who spent the day with us. We can't wait to find out just how much money the day raised for the Hospice.
“Springy's team are going into training already for next year's event."
Originating from China over 2,000 years ago the history of the Dragon Boat Race is steeped in magical yet heroic myth with Dragon Boat Racing becoming the world’s fastest growing water sport.
As well as the boat races, stalls selling goods and games and bouncy castles and rides were enjoyed by lots of children.
