Maypole Merriment Weekend

Date published: 12 May 2015

A Maypole Merriment weekend was held in Hare Hill Park, Littleborough over the weekend (Saturday 9 May and Sunday 10 May).

Organised by LEAF (Littleborough Events and Association Forum), Oakenhoof Cloggers and Hare Hill House Heroes, the event included classes organised to teach participants and a showcase in the park on Sunday.

Traditional games also took place in Hare Hill House with a Maypole outside of the front door.

Stephen Burke, Chairman of Friends of Hare Hill Park, said: “The park looked resplendent as a backdrop, as the cherry blossom was at its best and credit to the resident RMBC gardener Cath and her team for such a wonderful display in the flower beds.

“We are lucky to have LEAF, the backbone of community events in Littleborough, and Oakenhoof Cloggers, who are dedicated to preserving and performing local folk traditions with their band, Black Nan.

“The Hare Hill House Heroes work very hard to try and preserve Hare Hill House and The Friends of Hare Hill Park are thrilled to be working alongside such proactive people.

"It creates a lively atmosphere in the park which is valued by the residents in Littleborough.”

Paul Woodhead, Squire of Littleborough Oakenhoof said, "The event was decided on after an agreement between LEAF and Oakenhoof that Littleborough needed an event like this at this time of year. With the cooperation of Harehill House, and The Friends Of Harehill Park, we can all safely say it was a resounding success."

"This was a great example of what can happen when various community groups work together."

"I’m quite sure with the response this year that this is a definite calendar event in Littleborough’s future."
