Dave Hopwood charity fundraiser at The Flying Horse

Date published: 04 May 2015

Family and friends of Dave Hopwood came together on Sunday (3 May) evening to continue with their fundraising efforts.

Dave, from Wardle, was diagnosed with kidney cancer in April and has been told that the cancer is terminal.

Those close to Dave have been fundraising for a number of weeks to raise money for him and his son.

Suzanne Kavanagh who organised the charity event said: “It is really about a social event for Dave to socialise with his friends and family. It’s also a good opportunity for him to see people that he hasn’t seen to for a while.”

Held at The Flying Horse, the event included an auction, a raffle, a DJ and music from the Bacup Folk Club Ensemble.

Suzanne added: “We have about 160 people coming along so we’re really looking forward to it.”

As well as the charity evening, a charity football game was held during the afternoon at the Soccer Factory, Castleton. A number of people Dave had played football with throughout the years came together for the game.

Richard Attwood who played in the football game said: “It was a really good day and it was nice that so many people came together for Dave. He played football with a few different teams throughout his time, so it was nice for us all to come together.”

So far Suzanne and friends have raised almost £12,000 for Dave.

She said: ‘When I originally set the Go Fund Me page up, I only set the target at £500 but we are now at about £12,000 and it is brilliant. We are so overwhelmed at the support that people have shown, it is fantastic.”

It is hoped that the event will have raised a further £1,000.

Money raised from fundraising will go to Dave and his family.
