Canal group adopt stretch of canal

Date published: 04 May 2015

The Littleborough Adopt a Canal Group has successfully adopted its first stretch of canal in Littleborough and the certificate was presented to Bob Furnell, the group organiser, by Paul Bowerman, the Canal & River Trust Rochdale canal manager.

The adoption group installed and planted two Canal & River Trust plant containers to brighten up the Durn Wharf.

The group uncovered more cobbles (setts) at Lock 47 by removing over growth and also planted wild seeds right next to the tow path adjacent to the Halifax Road Canal Bridge.

A spokesperson for the group said: "The canal here in Littleborough is the biggest nature reserve we have here and we can now all help with preserving it.

"To join in just send your name in email to littleboroughcanal@hotmail.com and you will receive all event & volunteer dates, etc.

"Who knows, with the nature conservation The Littleborough Adopt a Canal Group are now doing, we may soon be encouraging otters and other endangered wildlife to live here."
