Balderstone War Memorial, outside the gates to Balderstone Park, which commemorates local men who fell in two world wars is to undergo restoration work that will include cleaning the stonework and restoring the names of the fallen which have become damaged or faded over the years.
Daniel Meredith, who pressed for the repair work to be carried out, said: "It is fitting that the memorial is repaired during the centenary events marking the Great War. Hundreds of men enlisted from Balderstone and Buersil, but sadly, many never came back. We should never forget their ultimate sacrifice.
Councillor Kathleen Nickson said: "The Council is restoring war memorials throughout the borough, but the Balderstone memorial was in danger of being overlooked. I am glad we have found the money to carry out this much needed restoration."
The work will be carried out in time for Remembrance Sunday.
