Residents concerned about speeding on Cartmel Walk

Date published: 29 April 2015

Cars speeding along Carmel Walk, Middleton is a concern for residents in the area, but Rochdale Council has stated that they won’t intervene due to the lack of road traffic accidents.

Residents have become increasingly concerned about the number of cars speeding along the street and are worried that children that play out in that area could end up in getting hurt due to the carelessness of drivers.

Resident Kimberly Bastow said: “I have a one-year-old daughter and a four-year-old step daughter who visits. I know of eight other young children living on this walk and all residents agree that cars are travelling too fast. I am concerned for the welfare of the children. I would like the speed of this road controlled before one of the children is hit.”

Kimberly has lived in the area for three years and says that speeding has always been an issue.

She added: “It has been a problem since I have lived here. We would like speed humps on the road to encourage people to slow down.”

Kimberly’s quest for speed humps comes after her family pet was killed on the road outside her house by a speeding car.

“This was the second time she had been hit. Our family and neighbours are devastated and children are traumatised as it was witnessed by a 6-year-old little boy and his older brother. This has caused a lot of upset and the person driving the car knew they may have hit our cat, but didn't stop to see if she was okay.

“I understand some people will see her as just a cat, but to the family and neighbours she was fun, affectionate and mostly mine and my step daughter’s best friend,” said Kimberly.

Rochdale Council say that as only one person has been injured in a road accident in that area, speed humps are not likely to be installed.

Steve Reay, Head of Highways at Rochdale Council, said: “There has been just one personal injury accident on this road over the past 13 years and therefore could not be considered for traffic calming measures.

“Speeding offences are a matter for the police and we will bring the resident’s concern to their attention.”
