Nicky Gorton would like your support to raise £1,200

Date published: 17 April 2015

Nicky Gorton, from Littleborough, aims to raise over £1,200 in order to fulfil an opportunity of a lifetime - nursing and helping people from babies to elderly in Nepal.

She was offered the chance to study abroad through her university, and hopes to spend two weeks at the end of her second year working in one of the world’s poorest countries.

The trip is with Work the World, and Nicky is hoping to work in local hospitals and communities, nursing people from babies to elderly. She said: "I would be tending to people in rural villages and jungles, assisting in their hospitals.

“I want to learn how they do it and experience elsewhere because I think it is important to get involved with different cultures. They experience situations like illnesses differently to what we do, and it’s a good quality to have to be able to help those in need."

Alasdair Thompson, Electives Consultant at Work the World, explained: "A placement in a developing country can contribute enormously to both a student's degree and their chosen career. It offers the opportunity to experience how healthcare is delivered in an under-resourced environment. Students will gain a deeper understanding of things like rare communicable diseases and gain new skills treating advanced pathologies."

Nicky, who has a son who suffers from autism, meaning that her household funds are limited, is currently a month into her second year as an adult nursing student at Manchester Metropolitan University, she explained: “I worked out the cost to be around £2,000 for flights, accommodation and food. I think I can afford to pay £800 of it myself but that means I still have £1,200 to raise.

“I’m looking to fund raise any way I possibly can, so if anybody has any ideas please let me know.”
