Reports of Waheed Ahmed returning to UK incorrect says GMP

Date published: 12 April 2015

It been has reported that Waheed Ahmed, Rochdale Labour Councillor Shakil Ahmed's son, who has been held in Turkey on suspicion of trying to enter Syria illegally, is on his way home to the UK.

However, Greater Manchester Police say this is incorrect, a spokesman for GMP said: "A number of media outlets are reporting a man detained on the border of Syria and Turkey will be arriving in the UK tonight/tomorrow morning. This is incorrect."

The BBC reported that footage released on Sunday shows Ahmed being put on a coach to Antalya, which is 509 miles west of Hatay, where he was detained along with eight other Britons on 1 April.

He is then filmed getting on a coach to Antalya from where it is believed he will fly to the UK.

GMP refuse to give any guidance on the timescales nor confirm travel arrangements. They say they will make an announcment when there is a "significant development" in the investigation.
