Walkers and runners came together on Saturday (4 April) morning to take part in the second 96 charity challenge for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

Organised by Will Purser, the walk was held in memory of Tom Hardman who died two years ago.

Will said: “We held the first event last year in memory of a friend who died and it went really well so we have done it again.”

Last year 180 walkers took part in the event and raised £10,500.

Money raised from the event will go to CRY.

CRY works to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) and supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to families affected by YSCD.

Will added: “We’re really pleased with the turn out today. It just shows what a great man Tom was.”

The 96 charity challenge is a nine-mile charity walk/run split across three stages.

Stage one was from Rochdale Cricket Club to Norden Cricket Club (2.4 miles). Stage two was from Norden Cricket Club to Heywood Cricket Club (2.6 miles) and stage three was from Heywood Cricket Club to Middleton Cricket Club (4 miles).

Will is hoping that the event will become an annual event.

“It is looking like it will be held next year and we are hoping that it becomes an annual event and really takes off,” added Will.
