Father and son have lucky escape after stones thrown from motorway bridge smash car windscreen

Date published: 02 April 2015

A father and son had a lucky escape last week after stones were thrown at their car from a motorway bridge in Heywood.

Police were called to the East Lancashire Bridge, over the M66 near to junction two, after they received reports from a number of motorists of youths throwing stones at cars.

Police attended the scene but the youths responsible had already fled.

One motorist was driving with his four-year-old son on board when an object hit his car and smashed the windscreen. He was shaken up by the incident but managed to maintain control of his vehicle. His son became very distressed.

It is understood that the incident took place at 3.40pm on Thursday 19 March.

A spokesperson for the police said: “This could have been a potentially fatal incident and we are therefore urging parents to speak with their children about the dangers of such behaviour and the potential consequences of their actions. This crime carries a fine and/or a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment.”

An investigation is currently ongoing to identify those responsible.

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
