Young Fathers play Number One Riverside

Date published: 14 March 2015

Young Fathers have toured the UK, Europe and the US with stops in Australia, Japan and Russia. Having been in South Africa in February the band moved on to Bratislava last week, returning to the UK for an intimate 'Library' gig in Skelmersdale before performing to an appreciative audience in the Library at Number One Riverside in Rochdale tonight (Saturday 14 March).

The band is oft described as a 'psychdelic hip hop trio', however all three sing as well as rap and their music defies classification picking up influences from genres as varied as hip hop, soul, folk, indie, trip hop and African music.

The band is comprised of Alloysious Massaquoi, originally from Liberia, Graham 'G' Hastings, from Drylaw in Edinburgh, and Scots-born Kayus Bankole, whose parents are Nigerian.

The Edinburgh-based trio won the Mercury Prize in 2014 beating 14-1 odds and competition from Damon Albarn, Bombay Bicycle Club and favourite FKA Twigs to win the £20,000 prize.

The band also won Scottish Album of the Year last year - another £20,000 prize - for their EP Tape Two, which earned them the interest of their American record label Anticon.
