Members of the Rochdale community did something funny for money today (Friday 13 march) and raised money for Comic Relief.

Schools and organisations got involved to raise money for the annual charity fundraiser which aims to transform the lives of millions of people in the UK and across Africa.

Broadfield Community Primary School had a fun day raising money. Staff and students at the school held a variety of fundraising activities throughout the day. Pupils at the school made their faces funny for money and wore something red or silly for the day. The school choir sung in the Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre, staff and pupils netball game took place after school and a raffle and a selfie completion also took place.

Claire’s Accessories have been raising money all week for the cause. Vikki Wall from Claire’s Accessories said: “We have had our staff dressing up in store to help create a fun atmosphere for everyone doing something this evening. We have also been selling lots of Red Nose Day products and helping people get made up for tonight.

We have had a really good response and people really seem to have embraced it.”

Staff at Nationwide Building Society made their faces funny for money and held a blind auction for a Rochdale Football Club signed ball. Kevin Lea from Nationwide said: “We would hopefully raise about £120 from something like this. When we do fundraising events we usually raise around £100.”

Skipton Building Society also got involved with the fun and held a bake sale in their branch. Staff members brought in homemade cakes for their customers to buy.

Kayleigh Dawson from Skipton Building Society said: “We have had a cake sale and a dress down day and people have been really supportive. Hopefully we raise about £50.”

Barclays Bank held a charity raffle throughout the day for the chance to win a hamper of goodies with staff also dressing in red. Staff member Ali Rana also dyed his hair and beard red for the day.

Matthew Dunn from Barclays Bank said: “We get involved with community things such as this whenever we can really. We have got staff in red and are holding the raffle.

Barclays also manage a call centre for the event so I will be going from here this evening to answer the phones and take donations. I have never done it before so I am not too sure what to expect.”

Comic Relief are hoping that with today’s fundraising activities, they break £1 billion barrier.
