Canon Mortimer Stanley pleads not guilty to charges of sexual assault
Date published: 13 March 2015
Canon Mortimer Stanley, 83, a retired Roman Catholic priest, has pleaded not guilty to 19 separate counts of incident assault involving 10 young girls during his time as a parish priest at St Vincent de Paul RC Church, Norden.
He will now face a trial in Manchester in November.
During a hearing at Manchester Minshull Street Crown, Court Canon Stanley appeared via video link from Limerick in Ireland.
He spoke only to confirm his name and to enter a plea of not guilty after each charge was read out to him.
He also nodded to say that he understood the proceedings and instruction given to him after he was addressed by Judge John Porter at the end of the hearing.
