David Crompton jailed

Date published: 11 March 2015

David Crompton, 35, of Milnrow Road, Rochdale has been jailed for 42 weeks after he pleaded guilty to possessing counterfeit money intending to pass or tender it as genuine and a separate offence of failing to surrender at court having been released on bail.

Crompton attempted to convert 500 counterfeit £1 coins into Euros at Crawshawbooth Post Office in Lancashire. He was turned away and later arrested in Burnley.

Burnley Crown Court heard that Crompton visited the post office on 11 October 2013 with the counterfeit money and was refused when staff said they didn’t have any Euros.

It is understood that a message was then put out to other post office staff about Crompton and his request by suspicious workers.

Crompton then attended Rose Hill Post Office in Burnley in an attempt to exchange the money but a member of staff recognised him.

The back office were then alerted by post office staff and they called the police.

When police attended, Crompton tried to flee but he was caught with the bag of coins.
