A Heywood community event led by the Greater Manchester Police Community Spirit Project has been described as a “successful day of fun”.

Held on Thursday (19 February) the event took place at both the Heywood Pub and St James Hall and was entitled ‘Bringing Heywood Together’.

The aim of the day was to improve community cohesion within the town by bringing young and old together in a fun and sociable environment.

Manchester United’s Community Team organised a penalty shootout for children who could also take advantage of a bouncy castle, face painting and enjoy the musical entertainment provided by a DJ. Heywood Model Railway Group also had a full size track layout on display.

The sale of food from the event went towards a fundraising drive to restore the Darnhill kick pitches to their former glory.

Heywood and Middleton MP Liz McInnes and Heywood North councillor Peter Rush attended. Also present were local police officers, including Heywood Inspector Steve Hanlon and the local team of PCSOs.

Local photographer Dave Kilcourse, of Perfect Image Studios, who helped organise the event, said: “It was great that so many people attended and enjoyed what was a very successful event. Thanks must go to all those who helped in any way. It just goes to show that the town does indeed have a very great community spirit.”
