Littleborough U3A group going from 'strength to strength'

Date published: 12 February 2015

The Littleborough U3A (University of the Third Age) group that launched last year is going from “strength to strength”, according to members.

70 members were in attendance at the groups meeting last week with interest continuing to grow in the community.

The U3A group currently runs a number of interest groups including a walking group, a Scrabble group and a singing group.

The walking group recently went out on their first walk of 2015 with 11 members enjoying the five mile walk along Rough Road, over the motorway bridge, under the viaduct and onto Hollingworth Lake. A coffee break was then had at Hollingworth Lake Visitors centre before the group headed back through Ealees.

The Scrabble group currently has six members as well as a number of their own boards and dictionaries. During their meetings, the group usually manage two
games and swap opponents after refreshments.

The singing group currently has nine members and would like more. The group are currently rehearsing two numbers at the moment and are aiming to give
their first performance at the U3A monthly meeting in April.

As well as having a number of dedicated groups for specific activities, the U3A also organises outings and events for everyone. Two lunches have already been enjoyed by the group – one at Bellavista and another at the Riverside Restaurant at Hopwood Hall College.

The group also recently enjoyed a Ghost Walk, a Manchester City Art Gallery tour, Christmas concert and trips to the theatre.

Despite a positive start to the year, the group had to say a fond farewell to member Nan Dearden who died in January.

The U3A group is a learning co-operative of retired and semi-retired people. U3A provides educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment for older citizens.
