School Lane, Ashworth blocked for two hours by HGV

Date published: 11 February 2015

School Lane, Ashworth, was blocked for almost two hours yesterday (Tuesday 10 February) when an HGV driver drove down the lane despite signs indicating School Lane is 'unsuitable for HGVs'.

Residents had to rally round to assist the driver in reversing back the full length of School Lane.

The Council has designated the lane a 'quiet lane' and erected fencing, chicanes and signs to indicate such to try and slow down traffic and deter wagons. However, it appears drivers simply follow 'sat nav' and find they cannot exit School Lane at its junction with Ashworth Road.

One of the residents said: "This type of incident occurs on a regular basis, necessitating the request of a police presence to help drivers negotiate reversing of their HGV the full length of School Lane back to Clay Lane. However, on this occasion the police did not arrive, hence residents rallied round to assist."

In a bid to alleviate what they say is a long term, ongoing problem, residents have suggested the signs are changed to read 'NO HGVs'.
