Domestic burglaries
We have seen an increase in hook and cane burglaries recently where offenders are using a hook like device which they put through the letter box to hook vehicle keys in order to steal the vehicle. When this has failed we have also seen cases where offenders have smashed a window to access the keys.
We are urging people to ensure they do not leave any keys in sight of windows/doors.
We have also seen a rise in burglaries/vehicle theft due to insecurities; some helpful tips are listed below.
- One in three burglaries are to homes that are insecure. Help deter burglars by making sure you shut and securely lock all windows and doors.
- Burglars don't just steal your property, they invade your privacy. Avoid becoming a target for burglars by not leaving valuable property on show.
- There today, gone overnight. Remember not to leave keys in the door or near windows where they can be easily grabbed.
- Never leave a spare key hidden outside. Burglars know all the usual hiding places.
- Wheelie bins are sometimes used as a climbing aid or as a means of transporting stolen property. Secure them if you can and ensure that they are stored away from windows and doors.
