Miracle anyone survived horrific head on crash

Date published: 07 February 2015

Two vehicles were involved in a horrific head-on collision in the early hours and it is a miracle all the occupants survived, though two people were trapped and had to be cut free by fire fighters.

The force of the impact ripped the engine out of one of the cars and left debris across Norden Road.

The driver of one vehicle, a Vauxhall Insignia, was already out of his vehicle when firefighters arrived but the 38-year-old driver and passenger were still trapped in their Ford Mondeo.

Fire crews from Rochdale and Heywood worked on one side of the vehicle while members of the Technical Response Unit worked on the other. They cut the roof off to free the trapped occupants, who were placed into the care of paramedics.

Fire Service Watch Manager Barry Malone said: “It’s incredible how they are still alive, they were very lucky. The engine of one car was ripped out on impact and we found it on the opposite side of the road. They were lucky not to hit a nearby lamppost.

“Those seatbelts saved their lives.”
