Former councillor Bernard Schofield dies

Former Wardle councillor, Bernard Schofield has died at the age of 82.

Mr Schofield, a former school governor, passionate horticulturist and former Wardle Councillor for more than 20 years died peacefully at his home on Tuesday 27 December.

In May 1976 he was first elected as a councillor and continued in the position for more than two decades. He eventually retired due to health issues.

Born in Rochdale, Mr Schofield lived in Wardle all of his life. After leaving school, he worked at Whittles Bakery in Littleborough and before then, he worked as a sales representative for Len Bottomley’s Paper Merchants in Rochdale.

He was also a governor at Wardle High School and St James’ CE Primary School.

When he wasn’t involved in politics, Mr Schofield was a keen gardener and regularly showed his flowers at horticultural shows and other events in the borough.

He leaves behind his daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

His funeral will take place at Rochdale Crematorium from 2:20pm on Friday 16 January.
