Adopt-A-Canal group make their plans to improve the canal

Date published: 13 January 2015

The Littleborough Adopt-A-Canal group met with representatives from the Canal & River Trust yesterday to flesh out their plans for rejuvenating the canal.

The voluntary group is an official Canal & River Trust group and will look after the stretch of canal between Bent House Lock (Lock 46) and Ealees (Lock 48).

Bob Furnell, group leader, and other members of the group met with Paul Bowerman, customer operations supervisor from the Canal & River Trust, and John Mellor from Todmorden Angling Society at Durn Lock to discuss how the group will move forward and improve the area.

The initial task includes litter picking, gardening and clearance of the over hanging vegetation of the towpath. They will be starting by clearing up the derelict warf by the Halifax Road Bridge.

Mr Furnell said: "We welcome anyone that would like to get involved or just have a chat with us about the canal here in Littleborough. We agree there is a lot more work to be done than meets the eye. I'm very excited about what this group will be planning for the future."

The group will meet on Sunday 8 Febuary at 10am at Durn Lock 47 by the Halifax Road Canal Bridge.  Everyone is welcome to join and find out how they can help.
