Students inspired by art

Date published: 09 January 2015

Students of AS level English Literature at Rochdale Sixth Form College enjoyed an inspirational visit to Manchester Art Gallery where they were able to see first hand the collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings that had inspired Alfred Tennyson to write his poems.

The visit gave them the opportunity to discuss their thoughts with a specialist at the gallery.

They then visited Manchester Metropolitan University where they put their research skills to practice and enjoyed tapping into the resources available to them.

Lottie Buchanan-Gough, 17, from Rochdale, said: “The painting of ‘The Lady of Shalott’ was really interesting as it opened my eyes to a whole new interpretation of the poem that I have been studying.”

English Literature teacher at Rochdale Sixth Form College, Hanni Fisher said: “For many of our students, this was the first time that they had visited the Manchester Art Gallery so it was a real pleasure to see such a high level of engagement with other art forms related to the literature that we are studying.”
