Residents of Moss Avenue ask Rochdale Township for help

Date published: 08 January 2015

Residents of Moss Avenue have asked for help from Rochdale Township in relation to safety issues that they are facing.

Drivers exiting the street onto Kingsway are often struggling to see past cars that are parked along Kingsway and due to this, a number of car accidents have occurred in the area.

Resident David Clayton spoke to the Rochdale Township Committee yesterday (Wednesday 7 January) and said: “I don’t know if you know where Moss Avenue is but for those of you who don’t, it is located just off of Kingsway. When we are exiting Moss Avenue, we are often faced with cars parking to use the Nissan garage and we can’t see when we are coming out. It becomes very difficult and due to this, a number of accidents have occurred.”

Mr Clayton then presented a petition to councillors that was collected by himself and other residents from the street who also want the problem resolved.

He added: “Everyone that this petition was presented to signed it. There was not one person who we presented it to that didn’t want to sign it.”

The residents are asking for double yellow lines to be painted near to the Nissan garage where the problem occurs so they have some visibility when exiting the street.

Mr Clayton was also keen to point out that he has approached the Nissan garage about the problem and, with the manager’s help, the problem did stop for a while.

Steve Reay, Head of Highways at Rochdale Council, said: “It is illegal for people to park within 10-15m of a junction but yet people still do it anyway. We suggest yellow lines and would ask the township to issue that.”

Even though Councillors agreed to help the residents with their problem, it was made known to councillors that there are currently no funds available in the township fund so the proposal would have to go onto a list for consideration.
