Councillors urge Highways Department to find a solution for Starkey Street, Heywood

Date published: 06 January 2015

Councillors urged members of the Highways Department to come up with an alternative solution to fixing safety issues on Starkey Street, Heywood yesterday (Monday 5 January).

At a meeting in November, councillors on they Heywood Township Committee decided to hold off on making a decision on what to do in the area until other options had been considered. The option presented to the township in November was to close the road off but this generated a backlash from councillors and residents.

At yesterday’s meeting, councillors asked for a new report to come to township as soon as possible as resident’s safety is paramount.

Councillor Liam O’Rourke said: “We need another report. Let’s get something done and make the road safe for pedestrians and drivers. Let’s get something done.”

Councillor Jacqui Beswick said: “Doing nothing is not an option, public safety is paramount.”

Councillor Peter rush added: “I agree that we can’t do nothing, closing the road off would have got no support.”

During November’s meeting, councillors discussed ideas for the area including a roundabout or traffic lights. Whilst some councillors were against the idea of traffic lights, most were in favour of a roundabout.
