Rochdale Sixth Form College
Proposals to extend Rochdale Sixth Form College with a new fifth floor study area have been accepted by the council.
The plans, put forward by AA Projects Ltd on behalf of the college, will see an unused balcony area on the roof of the building converted into study space for students to use outside of their timetabled classes.
A statement within the plans explains that the project will help students achieve their full potential following key changes to the A Level curriculum which comes into force in September 2015.
It states: “The intention of this project is to increase the study space available to students when they are not in classrooms with teachers so they can use their free time more productively.
“A typical A Level student is timetabled 15 hours per week and is expected to use the remaining time (20 hours) productively to achieve their potential.”
The changes to A Levels mean that examinations are no longer taken at the end of each year, instead being replaced by three exams at the end of a two-year course.
