Kingsway mountaineer Fida Hussain up for Leader of the Year award

Fida Hussain, a mountain training instructor from Kingsway, is in the running for for the Leader of the Year award from skills and awards group Mountain Training - the award given to inspirational mountaineers who encourage people to take up the activities of walking and hiking.

Fida, 48, was named Leader of the Month for October by Mountain Training and has since been entered for the annual award, voted for by members of the public.

“It’s really humbling,” Fida said. “I only found out on Wednesday."

Fida has been using his mountaineering skills within the community for more than 20 years, carrying out several projects to encourage young people to take up outdoor activities.

He is involved with delivering the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme in Rochdale and also carries out community projects in the area.

Fida’s work has seen him meet the Queen and deliver a speech at Buckingham Palace.

Speaking about his recent nomination, he added: “It’s nice to be recognised.”
