Littleborough Adopt a Canal group set to transform canal

Date published: 07 December 2014

A volunteer group set up by Littleborough resident Bob Furnell is set to transform the canal running through Littleborough.

The group, Littleborough Adopt a Canal, is hoping to transform the area around Lock 47 on Halifax Road to brighten it up and rejuvenate the area.

Speaking about the project Bob said: “It is about brightening the area up a bit more and to get local people involved in rejuvenating the area. Hopefully it would help Littleborough a bit and bring more people in to the village.”

The group, which currently has 15 volunteers, is starting at Lock 46 and working through to Lock 48.

“Hopefully we can clear away some of the trees, put some cobbles back on the land and get some fresh flowers planted then it will start to brighten the canal up,” added Bob.

Bob hopes to officially launch the group next week (Saturday 13 December) and hopes for the group to meet once a month to undertake work on the area.

He added: “Whether it’s litter picking or painting, we will aim to meet once a month to do the work and we will aim to have some of the areas useable within the year.”

Bob has been supported by the Canal and River Trust and Rochdale Council with his plans.

“Once work is underway and done at Locks 46 and 47, we will hopefully be able to move onto Locks 48 and 49 which will then see us move into Rochdale,” added Bob.
