The Spring Inn celebrates refurbishment with brass band performance
Date published: 05 December 2014
Milnrow Band entertained a full house of drinkers and diners with a lively programme of film music at The Spring Inn to celebrate the completion of refurbishments at the JW Lees owned pub, on Broad Lane.
The concert, organised by manager and band member Kate Mellor, starred Milnrow Band's new Musical Director Mark Bentham and was led on solo cornet by Chris Buckley.
The band commenced with the theme from the film Rocky, followed by James Bond hit "Live and Let Die", which featured Kenny Pain on the Soprano Cornet.
The first half also included well known tunes including '76 Trombones', from the Music Man, and Rodrigo’s 'Concerto De Aranjuez', with Natalie Beer on flugelhorn featuring as soloist in the latter item.
The less well known 'Feather Theme' from Forest Gump was also included, before the band launched into the uproarious 'Can Can' from Moulin Rouge, encouraging audience participation (dancing not included) and completing a very pleasing first half.
At the interval a surprise addition of hot dogs and chips were brought out for those requiring further sustenance.
The second half had a pronounced military flavour with such favourites as 'Aces High', '633 Squadron', 'Great Escape' and The Dam Busters theme.
'The Happy Wanderer' provided further opportunity for members of the audience to exercise their vocal chords, along with a storming rendition of Queen’s 'Bohemian Rhapsody', in which everyone participated.
At the finale the band earned a well-deserved standing ovation for their entertaining display.
