Concern after asbestos found in flat in Shawclough

Date published: 04 December 2014

Residents at flats in Shawclough are worried about the health implications after asbestos was discovered whilst an electrician was carrying out repairs.

A concerned tenant of the Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) flats said: "Just a few days ago RBH workmen drilled into an asbestos panel and one of the flats had to be evacuated. It is not yet known when they plan to inform other occupants at the flats and when an evacuation process will begin."

RBH has reassured tenants that there is no cause for concern and no need for neighbouring homes to be evacuated, a spokesperson said: “RBH’s asbestos team carries out surveys on all homes prior to any refurbishment work being undertaken.  Any suspected asbestos material may not always be detectable or visible at this stage. Our electricians have regular training so that they can identify asbestos found during the course of their work and take appropriate action.

"In this case, the asbestos was hidden behind the wall cavity.  The RBH electricians on site immediately contacted our asbestos team who attended promptly to take samples. They then also carried out an air reassurance test to ensure that there was no risk to our tenant or our employees.

“A safe system of work was then put in place to ensure that the work would be completed safely. The work being carried out was a re-wire and this delay meant that the work could not be completed within the original timescale, leaving the home temporarily without electricity. Our tenant was offered alternative accommodation but preferred to stay with family/friends.

“On site safety remains RBH’s highest priority and all work is and will continue to be undertaken in line with regulation and guidance. There is no need for people in neighbouring homes to be concerned and the tenant in question will return to the flat as soon as the electricity is reconnected.”
