Whitworth Road flood on Wednesday night
Following the water mains burst yesterday under Whitworth Road near to Dunelm, a spokesman from United Utilities has confirmed that a section of Whitworth Road will remain closed for approximately five days while they repair the carriageway and footpath.
He also said: “We’re very sorry for the impact caused by the burst water main which runs under Whitworth Road on Wednesday evening.
We managed to restore water supplies that same evening using our water tankers to pump water into the network.
Our engineers worked through the night and into Thursday morning to fix the damaged pipe."
The closure means there is no access to Whitworth Road from the junction with St Mary's Gate and John Street and traffic coming down Whitworth Road is being diverted along Haynes Street.
Mark Widdup, Director of Economy and Environment at Rochdale Council, said:
“Our emergency highways team was called out to a burst pipe last night and arranged for a temporary diversion to be put in place. This morning, the extent of the damage was assessed and found to be significant and required a more suitable, long-term diversion. This is now in place and will remain until the works are completed."
