Ongoing issues with Broadfield Park pond

Date published: 01 December 2014

After Rochdale Online reported in July that some local residents were describing the pond in Broadfield Park as an “absolute disgrace”, the issues have continued to occur with the pond.

It is understood that there is currently a leak in the pond turning it into a “mud bath”.

Jackie Kershaw, who was one of the first to notice the problems, said: “The council supposedly spent a lot of money on the pond a couple of years ago so what did they spend the money on only to neglect it again? There is a leak in the pond and that is why it is a mud bath now. How on earth could there be a leak so shortly after it was fixed up?”

Mark Widdup, Director of Economy and Environment at Rochdale Council, said: “We are aware of on-going problems with water draining away from the pond in Broadfield Park and have undertaken some initial work to try to resolve it. Sadly, this has not been successful and we are now investigating more heavily engineered, long-term solutions to the problem. We maintain responsibility for the pond and this has never been passed to the Friends.”

It is understood that the Friends of Broadfield Park are currently in the process of pricing up a restoration scheme to work on the pond area with the hopes for work to begin in Spring if funding is approved.
