REAG clean up

Date published: 30 November 2014

Members of the Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) cleaned the area around St John's Church, Ann Street, Dowling Street, Milkstone Road, William Street, Devon Street, Suffolk Street and Henry Street.

They also cleaned the corner of NHS Nye Bevan car park on the junction of Downling Street and Ann Street. They found it full of plastic bottles, cans, clothes, etc.

Members found the open area near the Asia Restaurant "litter infected" as it has become a "dumping place" for fly tippers.

They were invited to the church and offered tea and coffee by Sister Noel.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, Secretary of REAG, said: "We have been cleaning these areas for more than three years. We are volunteers and care about the Borough of Rochdale and would like to see that everyone in the borough takes responsibility for the front and rear of their properties. The customers who come to the area to enjoy food should show respect to the area and should not throw litter, food, trays, cans and paper on the road. The Borough of Rochdale is our home and should be treated as such. This a beautiful town with rich history and heritage. We can make it more beautiful town with our small efforts."

REAG will be cleaning the area near the Rochdale Infirmary next. Ward councillors and residents will be involved in the clean up.
