Would you announce you had cancer on social media before telling family?

Date published: 30 November 2014

Almost two in every three of us would confide in our partner first if diagnosed with mouth cancer, with one in five breaking the news to mum. Friends, children, dad and grandparents made up the rest of the list.

However, in a bizarre sign of the times we live in, social media also appeared in a new survey conducted on behalf of the British Dental Health Foundation, with a share of 18-35 year-olds posting it on the internet before informing family!

One in ten people said they would add the news to social media. With more than 65 million registered social media accounts in the UK alone, that could be almost six and half million people.

The results have been released as part of November’s Mouth Cancer Action Month, a campaign run to raise awareness of the disease and help those whose lives have been affected by mouth cancer.
