Mulled wine or muddled wine dates back to the 14th century
Mulled wine or muddled wine dates back to the 14th century thought to be a way of using wine which was past its best and about to spoil.
By adding spices and fruit it re invigorated the wine making it very drinkable.
Mulled being an old English word for muddled.
Made popular again by the likes of Charles Dickens in 'A Christmas Carol', this festive favourite is now readily available at the fabulous Manchester Christmas markets.
There are many recipes out there for mulled wine with some requiring a good deal of effort but here is one of my favourites for a fast glass of merriment.
- 1 litre dry red wine
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tablespoon whole cloves
- 1 tablespoon whole allspice
- 1 large piece orange rind
- 1 large piece lemon rind
- 4 tablespoons sugar
Combine in a saucepan.
Simmer but do not allow the liquid to boil.
As soon as you’ve had your first glass you know it’s Christmas time.
