A 28-year-old man has died in Middleton after being pushed into the path of a moving car following an altercation outside the Carters Arms pub between the victim and a group of men.

At around 12.45am (Sunday 16 November), emergency services were called to Boardman Lane in Middleton to reports of a collision.

When officers attended they found a 28-year-old man with serious injuries and despite the efforts of paramedics and officers he died at the scene.

A post mortem examination will take place later today to establish the cause of death.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Superintendent Andy Peach said: "A man has lost his life after what appears to have been an argument which has got out of control.

"I understand the community will be concerned about what has happened but we believe this was an isolated incident.

"We have already made on arrest in connection with the incident and we have a number of lines of inquiry to follow up and we are confident further arrests will follow.

"This happened in the early hours of a busy Sunday morning so I am confident there will be people out there with information.

"If you witnessed the fight or the collision that followed, please contact us with any information."

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call police on 0161 856 8701 or independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
