Firefighters worked through the night to tackle a fire involving the Tesco shop and storage area of the petrol station in Heywood.

The fire broke out at the  property at around 2.50am (Sunday 16 November) with seven engines and an aerial appliance in attendance at the height of the incident on York Street.

Crew wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to bring the blaze under control and jets of water were sprayed on to the petrol pumps to keep them cool.

Station Manager Phil Nelson, who was in charge of the incident at its height, said: “Firefighters worked really hard to tackle the complex fire that involved the storage ara and shop of the petrol station.

“We worked closely with Greater Manchester Police, who looked after road closures in the area while we fought the fire.”

At around 8am the incident was scaled down.

Fire engines will remain at the scene while investigations are carried out.

Roads in the area are now back open.
