Middleton kick started the Christmas festivities this evening (Saturday 15 November) as hundreds of people gathered in the town centre to watch the Christmas lights being switched on.

Mayor Carol Wardle switched the lights on, which was immediately followed by a spectacular firework display.

Organised by Middleton Town Centre Management, the event included entertainment by local artists including Middleton Popstars, Joey Matthews and the Glenda Ann School of Dance as well as market stalls, food stalls, fairground rides and a giant snow globe.

Mayor Wardle was joined on stage by Councillor June West, Chairwoman of the Middleton Township Committee, MP Liz McInnes, Father Christmas and Igglepiggle for the switch on.

Mayor Wardle said: “By switching the lights on this evening it means we are getting even closer to Christmas so I hope everyone has been good.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to Ashleigh Franklin from Middleton Town Centre Management for single handily organising this fantastic event.”

Ashleigh Franklin said: “It has been a great event and it really is a community event that gives local people a chance.”
