Canon Mortimer Stanley charged with child sex offences
Date published: 14 November 2014
Canon Mortimer Stanley, 82, appeared at Bury Magistrates court on Thursday (13 November) facing 17 charges of indecent assault on a girl under 14 during his time as a parish priest at St Vincent de Paul RC Church.
The offences allegedly took place between 1977 and 1988 and involve 10 victims, all of whom were pupils at nearby St Vincent’s primary school.
Greater Manchester Police charged Canon Stanley, who now lives in Ireland, following several complaints made by former pupils.
He had already been made to travel to Greater Manchester twice previously, in November of last year and May this year, to answer police questions.
The priest, of Ballybunion, Kerry, joined the Norden church in 1972 and left his position in 2002.
